Karen Bass was sworn in as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles on Sun., making history as the city's first woman to become mayor.

Bass was elected mayor in Nov. with 54.8% of the vote, defeating opponent Rick Caruso by 9.6 points. (NYT)

During her inaugural speech Sun., Bass vowed to declare a state of emergency on homelessness as her first act as mayor.

Bass: "...we must have a single strategy to unite our city and county and engage the state..."

Bass: "My emergency declaration will recognize the severity of our crisis and break new ground..."

Bass: "[We will] welcome housing to every neighborhood."

Bass: "We cannot continue to overcrowd neighborhoods that are already overcrowded."

Bass: "...what neighborhoods are asking for and what they need is as diverse as our city."

Bass: "Making history with each of you today is a monumental moment in my life and for Los Angeles..."

Bass: "I believe that times of inflection require reflection..."

Bass: "I believe, it's time for Angelenos to remind ourselves where we come from and who we are..."

Bass: "[My parents'] love, support and guidance is why I stand before you today.''

Bass: "...we will save lives and save our city...that is my mission as your mayor."
