Sen. Ted Cruz is back in Texas after facing fire for travelling to Cancún, Mexico amid a statewide power crisis.

Cruz was met with widespread blowback after he was spotted fleeing the state for Cancún with his family Wed. afternoon.

Millions of Texans were left without power and water this week after a winter storm hit the state. 21 have died. (AP)

Cruz was spotted flying back to Texas on Thu.. In a statement, he cited his daughters as the reason for the trip. (AP)

Cruz: "...our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them..."

NBC News' Peter Alexander reported Thu. that Cruz was initially "booked to return on Saturday."

Cruz told reporters outside of his home on Thu. that the trip was "obviously a mistake."

Cruz: "[I returned because I] didn’t want...the screaming and yelling about this trip to distract...from the real issues."

Cruz: "From the moment I sat on the plane, I began really second-guessing that decision..."

Texas Democratic Party chair Gilberto Hinojosa told ABC13 that he was calling for Cruz's resignation in wake of the flight.

Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee also addressed the scandal during a visit to a water sanitation site on Thu.

Lee: "I do think in a time of crisis the place and the only place I want to be is with the people I represent."
