Bella Ainsworth is living her dream as the owner of a hotel in Portofino, Italy. But she must contend with old problems which followed her from England, as well as the new threats of fascist Italy.

It's the start of the summer season at Hotel Portofino and the guests have just begun to arrive.

The staff is hard at work preparing for their arrival. All are adjusting to hotel life, and expectations are high.

Hotel proprietress, Bella Ainsworth, wants to make a good first impression on her important clientele.

Things start off on the wrong foot when hotel guest, Julia, mistakes Bella's son, Lucian, for one of the Italian "help."

Meanwhile, honored guest, Lady Latchmere, is struggling to adjust to the hustle and bustle of life at Hotel Portofino.

Julia, and her daughter, Rose, are eager to impress the Ainsworths, whom Julia knows from back home in England.

The guests get to know each other over dinner and drinks.

Bella encourages Lucian to play host to Julia and Rose to make up for their awkward first encounter.

After dinner, Bella discusses a potential match between Rose and Lucian with her daughter, Alice, and tries a new cocktail.

Lucian goes for a late night dip with his friend, Dr. Anish Sengupta, and reveals the scars he received during WWI.

In the morning, Bella finds Anish and thanks him for being such a devoted friend to Lucian.

Bella then confronts her husband, Cecil, who arrived late the night before, for taking money from the hotel's cash box.

At the same time, head cook, Betty, is delighted to welcome the Ainsworth's new nanny, Constance, to Hotel Portofino.

Bella checks in with Lucian, who's struggling with his father's expectations of him and his creative ambitions.

Bella meets council member, Signor Danioni, who reveals he knows she is having an affair, and sets about extorting her.
