Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Tue. signed into law a statewide ban on assault weapons—the ninth such ban in the US.

The Illinois state Senate first passed the law—AKA the Illinois Communities Protection Act—on Mon. by a 34-20 vote.

The state House followed suit on Tue., voting to pass the ban by a 68-41 vote. (USA Today)

House Speaker Chris Welch celebrated the ban's passage Tue.: "Let’s end families having to change overnight."

Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton: "We need those communities to be safe to be our best selves both physically and mentally."

Stratton: "Gun violence anywhere is a threat to wellbeing everywhere."
