Ohio voters on Tue. rejected Issue 1, a GOP-backed measure that would have raised the threshold to amend the constitution.

According to the NYT, the measure failed by 14 points, with 57% of voters voting "NO" on Issue 1.

What would Issue 1 have done? The measure would have raised the threshold to amend the constitution to 60%. (NYT)

The measure also would have required ballot petitioners to gather signatures from all of Ohio's 88 counties. (WP)

Ohio Republicans introduced Issue 1 last spring in an effort to block an abortion rights amendment in the state.

This Nov., Ohio voters will vote on a ballot initiative to enshrine reproductive rights in the state constitution.

The amendment was certified in July after abortion rights advocates collected 495K+ signatures from 55 counties. (OCR)

So, what does this mean? It means that the threshold to pass an abortion rights amendment this Nov. will be 50% plus one.

Could it pass? It's likely: per a FiveThirtyEight poll average, 57% of Ohioans support the abortion amendment.
