The Associated Press called the race for Johnson Tue. night: he defeated Paul Vallas by 2.8 points with 91% reporting.

Johnson's victory was unlikely: Vallas led Feb.'s general election by 11.2 points with 32.9% of the vote. (NYT)

Johnson will succeed outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot; he will formally assume office on May 15, 2023.

Johnson thanked his supporters with a victory speech Tue. night: "Now Chicago will begin to work for its people."
