The UN kicked off World Press Freedom Day Mon. with a new, timely theme: “Information as a public good.”

Per the UN, the theme serves as "a call to affirm the importance of cherishing information as a public good."

World Press Freedom Day comes at a critical time for the fourth estate.

According to the 2021 World Press Freedom Index, journalism is "completely or partly blocked" in 73% of the world.

The United States moved up from 45th to 44th place in the Index's press freedom rankings this year. (RSF)
