The Supreme Court on Fri. ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion.

The Court ruled 5–4 to overturn Roe, arguing in its majority opinion that the 1973 decision was "wrongly decided."

Justice Samuel Alito penned the majority opinion: "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start."

Alito: "It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives."

Five of the Court's six conservatives voted to overturn Roe; Chief Justice John Roberts joined the liberals in dissent.

Roberts, in a concurring opinion: "The Court's decision to overrule Roe and Casey is a serious jolt to the legal system."

Several leaders reacted to the decision with outrage: Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the decision a "slap in the face."

Pelosi: "Today the Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved their dark...goal of ripping away women's rights."

Pelosi: "We are not going to let this pass."

Fri.’s ruling gives the green light for states to enact total or partial bans on abortion, regardless of viability. (NYT)

13 states are set to enact total bans on abortion within the next 30 days. Five have already banned the procedure. (NYT)

According to the Guttmacher Institute, 52% of "women of childbearing age" will face new abortion restrictions post-Roe.

Roe just is the beginning: in a concurring opinion, Justice Thomas called on the Court to reconsider other past rulings.

In his opinion, Thomas singled out the Court’s rulings on contraceptives and same-sex marriage for reconsideration.

Pelosi: "It's about contraception, IVF, family planning...that is what will spring from their decision today."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez showed up to a protest outside of the Supreme Court Fri. to speak out against the ruling.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Fri.: "People will die because of this decision."

Ocasio-Cortez: "Overturning Roe and outlawing abortions will never make them go away. It only makes them more dangerous..."

California Rep. Maxine Waters was also spotted attending the demonstration outside of the Supreme Court Fri..

Waters: "If they think Black women are intimidated or afraid, they got another thought coming."

Pres. Joe Biden on Fri. called the decision "a sad day" for the country and called on Congress to codify abortion rights.

Biden: "This decision is the culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law."

Biden: "This decision must not be the final word. My administration will use all of its appropriate lawful powers..."

Biden directed HHS Fri. to take steps to make abortion and contraception medication widely available across the US.

Biden: "...with your vote, you can act, you can have the final word."

Biden: "...personal freedoms are on the ballot, the right to privacy, liberty, equality, are all on the ballot..."

VP Kamala Harris also criticized the ruling Fri. during an event in Illinois, calling it a "health care crisis."

Harris: "...today's decision on that theory, then, calls into question other rights that we thought were settled..."

Harris: "...such as the right to use birth control, the right to same-sex marriage, the right to interracial marriage."

Harris: "...the expansion of freedom clearly is not inevitable. It is not something that just happens..."

Rep. Lauren Underwood also addressed the ruling during Fri.'s event: "Today's ruling ignores our stark reality..."

Underwood: "Reproductive freedom and maternal health are inextricably linked."

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin on Fri.: "We cannot let our children inherit a nation that is less free..."

House Republicans celebrated the ruling Fri., calling it a "victory for the sanctity of life."

Texas GOP Rep. Mayra Flores: "Hallelujah. I woke up this morning praying for this."

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy: "Our work is far from done."

The Court's ruling also made waves abroad: UK PM Boris Johnson criticized the ruling, calling it a "step backwards."

Johnson: "It has massive impacts on people's thinking around the world."

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau called the ruling an "attack on women's freedom."

Trudeau: "No government, politician, or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body."
