Republican businessman Glenn Youngkin has won the Virginia gubernatorial race, defeating former Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

The AP called the race for Youngkin early Wed. morning. Youngkin won 51% of the vote with 97% reporting. (CBSN)

Youngkin is the first Republican to win statewide in Virginia since 2009. Biden won the state by 10 points in 2020. (AP)

Virginia Republicans are also projected to win back the state House, which they lost in 2019 after two decades of control.

Youngkin thanked his supporters at an event Wed. morning: "Together, we will change the trajectory of this commonwealth!"

McAuliffe appeared at a campaign event earlier Tue. evening, but didn't concede the race.

McAuliffe: "This is a different state...we will continue that fight."

McAuliffe was also spotted dancing at the event.
