People across the world are rallying in support of Ukraine under one common salute: "Slava Ukraini."

World leaders, from Ukrainian Pres. Zelensky to UK PM Johnson, have used the phrase after Russia's invasion last week.

What does it mean? The phrase is Ukrainian for "glory to Ukraine!"

According to France 24, the phrase first came to use during the Ukrainian War of Independence in the late 1910s.

In 2018, the Ukrainian military adopted the phrase as its official salute after a resurgence in popularity. (NYT)

The phrase is commonly followed by a response, "heroiam slava!" which means "glory to heroes!"
