New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries was elected to succeed outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi as minority leader in 2023.

2. President Joe Biden on Thu. hosted French President Emmanuel Macron for his first state visit since 2019.

3. After months of talks, the Senate on Tue. voted to enshrine federal protections for same-sex and interracial marriages.

The bill, AKA the Respect for Marriage Act, passed the chamber by a bipartisan 61–37 vote. (AP)
