Amy Hannah Johnston, a retired Brigadier General from Fredericksburg, VA, dedicated more than three decades to serving in the U.S. Army. Growing up in Edina, MN, and Findlay, OH, she was instilled with a strong sense of discipline and a commitment to service. These foundational values shaped her career and continue to influence her life today, both in her ongoing community efforts and her continued leadership roles. During her distinguished military career, Amy served in numerous vital roles in combat and humanitarian missions across the globe. She held key positions in Seoul, Korea, Mons, and Belgium. She worked at the United Nations Command, the Combined Forces Command in Korea, and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the NATO military command. Her work in these high-profile positions helped shape international military operations and strengthened global partnerships. Amy currently serves as an advisor to the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship at the American University in Bulgaria, where she contributes to efforts aimed at advancing democracy and civic engagement around the world. A central part of Amy’s life has been honoring the memory of her late husband, Major General Gary W. Johnston. After his unexpected passing, she established the Gary Johnston Leadership Award at Arkansas Tech University to celebrate his legacy. The award continues to recognize individuals who exhibit the same leadership qualities and integrity that her husband demonstrated throughout his career, ensuring that his impact is felt for future generations. Amy’s academic journey played a crucial role in her career. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Ohio State University and a master’s in Communications from the American University in Washington, DC. These studies provided her with valuable insights into human behavior and the inner workings of organizations, which greatly informed her approach to leadership within the military. She also holds a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School at the National Defense University and graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Throughout her 31 years of service, Amy held senior-level positions across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, where her strategic vision and communication skills were put to work in various challenging contexts. Her contributions included assisting Cuban and Haitian migrants in Operation Sea Signal in Cuba, providing disaster relief during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. She also served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she helped coordinate efforts to stabilize the region during years of conflict. Following her military retirement, Amy remains dedicated to her community. She works with Tree Fredericksburg to promote environmental sustainability and is also an active volunteer with her therapy dog, Duke, helping military veterans through the Alliance for Therapy Dogs.
