Crowdfunding Campaign to Help Last Male Northern White Rhino Draws Support From Social Media

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Nanyuki, Kenya is home to Sudan, the last male northern white rhino in the world, who requires round-the-clock protection by armed guards to safeguard him from potential poachers. Staff at Ol Pejeta hope that Sudan will eventually mate with one of the two female northern white rhinos housed at the covervancy, Fatu and Najin, who Ol Pejeta say are actually Sudan’s daughter and grand-daughter. Ol Pejeta has spread awareness of Sudan’s story on social media under the hashtag #LastMaleStanding. However, funding the security and protection efforts at Ol Pejeta is a costly business and they have now turned to crowdfunding to help raise funds, seeking £75,000 to aid its operations over the next six months. Rob Breare, the Ol Pejeta staff member running the crowdfunding campaign says on the page that recent terrorist attacks in Kenya and misconceptions about Ebola in the country have severely hampered tourist numbers to the conservancy.
