The Björk Gymnastics Club was founded on July 1, 1951 in Hafnarfjörður. The purpose of the association was to promote the practice of gymnastics as much as possible among younger and older people and also to promote the practice of national and foreign folk dances.
The association planned to go primarily on the path of making gymnastics as universal as possible, and that women, young and old, practiced it for the benefit they would get from it themselves, and not in order to hold exhibitions for the public. Of course, there would also be rehearsed classes that could perform publicly.
The prelude to the foundation of the club was that in the fall of 1949, around twenty girls between the ages of 15 and 17 got together and started practicing gymnastics under the guidance of physical education teacher Þorgðar M. Gísladóttir. They got to practice in the gymnasium of Hafnarfjörður Children's School. When the group had trained together for two years, it was decided to form an official club, which was named Fimleikafélagið Björk.
