Jacob Korenblum has established himself as a leader in enterprise digital strategy. For over 15 years, he has designed and launched digital solutions for real-world challenges in various regions, including Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His efforts have been highlighted by top media outlets such as The Financial Times, Forbes, Devex, and Scientific American. He currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, where he indulges in his passion for sailing. Korenblum's professional journey began after he graduated with a bachelor's degree. He took a role at the Education Development Center in Washington, D.C. This nonprofit organization operates worldwide and aims to improve work opportunities, educational programs, and health services in 80 countries. He quickly moved up the ranks to become the director of monitoring, evaluation, and communications for a project in the Middle East, where he lived for several years. Following his tenure at the Education Development Center, he took a position at OXFAM, a renowned international nonprofit organization. Here, he focused on enhancing gender equality, economic opportunities, and climate action, directly engaging with communities in Malawi, India, Haiti, and Kenya from 2008 to 2010. His roles included leading teams on microenterprise assessment projects and pioneering mobile technology initiatives that significantly boosted local economies. One pivotal observation during his time in the Middle East in the early 2000s was the vast potential for mobile technology to facilitate economic freedom. Despite the widespread lack of reliable internet access in regions like Palestine—where high costs and limited network coverage were significant barriers—he noted that about 80 percent of the local population owned mobile devices. This insight led to the founding of Souktel in 2005, a social venture named from the Arabic for "telephone" and "market." This initiative successfully used SMS to connect job seekers with employers, dramatically enhancing employment opportunities without the need for the Internet and growing to assist over 500,000 users across approximately 30 countries. In 2018, Korenblum shifted his career focus to managing digital policy development for the Government of Ontario. In this capacity, he aided the Ontario Digital Service in crafting policies that streamlined digital service delivery, including critical COVID-19 services. Jacob Korenblum, a University of Toronto alumnus with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and a Harvard-educated Master of Education focusing on social enterprise and international education policy, continues to be a vital force in addressing global social challenges. He remains dedicated to using his extensive experience to support small business owners and communities worldwide.
