Frank Meza, a distinguished Physician in Charge at the East Los Angeles Kaiser and a Partner at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, later became the Chief Medical Officer at Altamed. He was deeply committed to improving healthcare access and creating educational opportunities for the Latino and Chicano communities. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, his life was shaped by resilience, hard work, and a profound respect for his cultural roots. Even before his medical education, he worked tirelessly to inspire and guide Latinos into medicine and education. Through his involvement with organizations like the Hippocrates Circle, the Latino Medical Student Association, and MiMentor, he helped many Latinos pursue careers in healthcare. Dr. Meza’s academic journey faced obstacles, but his determination carried him through. He attended Cathedral High School, where he excelled academically and athletically, particularly in running. Although he struggled with subjects like German, Latin, and Chemistry, his goal of becoming a medical doctor kept him focused. After transferring to Cal State Northridge, he earned a dual bachelor’s degree in journalism and public health. His dedication led him to medical school, where he achieved his lifelong goal. For almost five decades, Meza dedicated himself to reducing healthcare disparities and improving medical services for underserved communities across California. His advocacy work greatly contributed to the increase in opportunities for Latino physicians. In addition to his role as a physician at Kaiser Hospital, he also served as an instructor at Los Angeles Kaiser Medical Center, where he helped shape the next generation of healthcare professionals. Frank was born to immigrant parents and grew up in Los Angeles before moving to Frogtown. His mother worked as a garment worker, and his father, who passed away when Meza was young, worked at a Hollywood restaurant. Raised by his mother, he learned the importance of academics and physical activity, which fueled his passion for running. This love for running earned him a college scholarship and continued to influence his life. Frank earned a B.A. and M.A. in Journalism from California State University at Northridge, a Master of Public Health from UCLA, and a Medical Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis. Later, he became a partner at Southern California Permanente Medical Group, focusing on addressing healthcare disparities and improving opportunities for Latinos in the medical field. Meza’s contributions to healthcare education, medical service, and community advocacy have left a lasting legacy. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter, and his influence continues to inspire future generations.
