Dr. Kamran Massoumi, MD, is an ophthalmologist and the owner and president of the Oklahoma Eye Institute and the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Born in 1967 in Tehran, Iran, he was raised in a family deeply rooted in politics and medicine. His paternal grandfather was a high-ranking military officer and politician who served as the Minister of Agriculture during the Shah’s regime. He is descended from Iranian royalty on his mother's side, with his maternal grandfather being only three generations removed from the King of Iran. However, despite his family's political connections, it was his grandfather’s legacy as a pioneering ophthalmologist that shaped He’s path. His grandfather is regarded as a pioneer in Iranian ophthalmology. He founded the country’s first ophthalmology department and led efforts to combat the trachoma pandemic, which had caused widespread blindness. His contributions inspired him from an early age, and by the time he was five, he had already decided to dedicate his life to ophthalmology, following in his grandfather’s footsteps. In 1983, during the Iran-Iraq War, Dr. Massoumi moved to the United States with his mother and younger sister. They settled in Marin County, California, where he adapted quickly to his new life, learning English and adjusting to American culture. He graduated from Marin Catholic High School and then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a double major in Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies. His hard work and academic dedication earned him acceptance into St. Louis University Medical School, where he received his medical degree with distinction in research. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. After completing his residency, Kamran Massoumi initially planned to return to California, but he was drawn to Western Oklahoma, where a significant shortage of ophthalmologists existed. In 2002, he joined the BVA practice in Oklahoma. His grandfather’s commitment to public service motivated him to stay in the region. Over the years, he introduced advanced technology, expanded services, and founded the Oklahoma Eye Institute in 2014. This institute brought retinal and plastic surgery specialties to the area. Today, He continues to offer cutting-edge treatments for cataracts, glaucoma, and laser surgeries, ensuring residents have access to world-class care without traveling to major cities. In addition to founding the Oklahoma Eye Institute, Dr. Massoumi saw the need for surgical facilities closer to home and opened the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and an office-based operating room in Elk City. These facilities have alleviated the travel burdens for patients seeking surgical care, allowing them to receive treatment locally. His long-term vision is to attract more ophthalmologists to Western Oklahoma, ensuring that the region remains self-sufficient in its vision care needs. Outside of his professional life, He is married and has two daughters who share a passion for martial arts. The family holds black belts in Taekwondo, and his youngest daughter holds a second-degree black belt. He also enjoys traveling and has participated in medical mission trips, including one to Vietnam, where he performed eye surgeries to restore vision to those in need.
