Gianmarino Gianfrate is a Trauma and Critical Care Fellow at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He has built a strong foundation in trauma surgery, surgical critical care, and advanced resuscitation. After passing his general surgery boards in October 2025, he became a board-certified general surgeon and is scheduled to take his critical boards in September 2026. He is also an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Chest Wall Injury Society. In addition to caring for trauma patients, Dr. Gianfrate is committed to education, physician training, and quality improvement. He serves as an instructor through Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma, Rural Trauma Team Development, Stop the Bleed, and multicenter pREBOA education programs. As Course Director for both ATLS and ASSET, he leads training in trauma assessment, resuscitation, and operative trauma management. He also takes part in the Advanced Resuscitation Fellows Educational Series, a fellowship network focused on resuscitation science, innovation, simulation-based learning, and leadership development. As an invited educator for a multicenter collaborative, Gianmarino Gianfrate, MD, teaches residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams on the use of pREBOA and advanced resuscitation techniques. He has helped create educational materials used across participating institutions and has presented these topics at academic centers and conferences. He was also invited to present at the SHIP Conference, where he shared institutional venous thromboembolism data and updates to practice guidelines. Before beginning his fellowship, Gianfrate served as a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University, where he taught medical students and surgical residents in clinical and operative settings. He also held leadership roles involving research, accreditation, physician wellness, and graduate medical education. Through these responsibilities, he contributed to research oversight, resident education, accreditation efforts, quality improvement initiatives, and programs supporting physician development. Gianmarino's honors include the Dr. Rashid Abdu “My Surgeon” Award; the Surgical Research Resident Award for three consecutive years from 2023 through 2025; the Surgical Critical Care Resident Award in 2022; the Looking to the Future Scholarship Award in 2023; and the Glimmer of Hope Grant. His research interests include trauma surgery, trauma resuscitation, traumatic brain injury, critical care, hemorrhage management, and surgical outcomes. Gianmarino Gianfrate completed his General Surgery Residency at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital from 2020 to 2025. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, earned a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Science with the same distinction, and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. A first-generation Italian-American and former collegiate lacrosse captain, he enjoys mentorship, surgical education, cooking, winemaking, volunteer service, and spending time with his wife and their two dogs.
