Thomas Gratzer, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist whose career in general and forensic psychiatry spans more than three decades. Working throughout Minnesota’s Twin Cities region, he has provided care through organizations including United Hospital, Regions Hospital, Fairview University Medical Center, and Psych Recovery. His work combines psychiatric treatment with forensic evaluations, reflecting his broad expertise in both healthcare and legal settings. Over the years, Dr. Thomas Gratzer has held several respected positions in forensic and correctional psychiatry. He served as Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital and later became a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections. In this role, he worked closely with incarcerated youth, helping address mental health conditions and behavioral challenges through specialized psychiatric treatment and evaluations. Teaching and mentorship have also been central to Dr. Gratzer’s professional accomplishments. As an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, he spent nearly twenty years educating psychiatry residents, medical students, and law students. He additionally lectured at several institutions across North America, where he shared knowledge on forensic psychiatry, psychiatric ethics, and the relationship between medicine and the legal system. Dr. Gratzer has contributed extensively to psychiatric research and professional organizations throughout his career. His published studies explored topics including impulse control disorders, compulsive sexual behavior, and forensic mental health treatment. His work earned multiple research honors and recognition from national psychiatric associations. He also remained active within organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Outside of medicine, Dr. Thomas Gratzer has maintained a longstanding interest in technology and computer science. Earlier in his career, he coauthored a book on TRS-80 computing and participated in the development of VP Info, a database programming language that achieved widespread commercial success. In his personal life, he enjoys tennis, skiing, fitness, travel, and supporting educational initiatives while continuing his commitment to mental health advocacy and patient care.
