Keith Brautigam is an experienced IT and cybersecurity professional with a strong background in identity and access management. Over the years, he has held several roles and advanced to leadership positions, including Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Interim Chief Information Officer (CIO) at a well-known university. He has consistently focused on strengthening security measures, improving IT infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with relevant industry regulations across multiple organizations. Keith was born in San Diego, California, and moved to the East Bay Area of San Francisco when he was two. His early exposure to technology came through friends who had Amiga and Atari computers. Initially interested in video games, he quickly became curious about how computers worked and how he could optimize their performance. Later, his family relocated to Iowa City, Iowa, where he attended high school and earned a degree in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Iowa. This experience also allowed him to study abroad in Mérida, Venezuela, broadening his perspective. After completing his degree, Keith entered a competitive job market, especially after the 1990s eCommerce bubble burst. He moved to the Research Triangle in North Carolina and worked as a supervisor at a Borders bookstore. Though this was not aligned with his career goals, it provided valuable experience in leadership and customer service. Eventually, he returned to Iowa City, where he was offered a position at a medical research center. This marked the beginning of his IT career, during which he took on the role of Systems Administrator and focused on system security, particularly compliance with HIPAA regulations. Keith’s career transitioned into higher education, where he helped modernize internal processes and integrate new technologies. His experience with Agile SCRUM software development practices led to his recruitment by the University of Iowa’s central IT department. In 2014, he moved to a highly reputable university, where he advanced from Manager to Director, CISO, and ultimately to Interim CIO. During his time there, he played a pivotal role in initiatives such as the Shields Up cybersecurity program, which significantly bolstered the university’s security measures. In 2023, he moved to the Denver Metro Area and joined Hunter Douglas as the Global Cybersecurity Director of Identity and Access Management. In this role, he quickly established an IAM program, led the implementation of a new identity governance system, and worked on improving security across multiple regions.
