Thomas Pepin, better known as Tom Pepin, is a Tampa Bay business leader and philanthropist whose work has supported education, healthcare, commerce, and public safety throughout the region for more than forty years, as a Former President and CEO of Pepin Distributing Company. During his years leading the company, he focused on building a strong business while also helping local organizations grow and serve their communities.
Tom Pepin returned to Florida after graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont. After completing his education, he joined the family business and began working at Pepin Distributing Company. In 1986, he purchased the company from his father and started guiding its future direction.
Under his leadership, the business expanded into one of the largest beverage distribution companies in Florida. Over time, the company grew into an enterprise valued at approximately $260 million and became an important distribution partner for major beverage manufacturers. The organization built a reputation for disciplined operations, dependable service, and strong working relationships across the region.
While guiding the company’s growth, Thomas also encouraged a culture of community support. Pepin Distributing regularly contributed to nonprofit organizations, civic groups, and programs that assist first responders. These efforts helped establish the company as a responsible corporate citizen, closely connected to the Tampa Bay community.
A major example of his commitment to community support is the T. Pepin Hospitality Centre. Tom established the facility to provide nonprofit organizations with access to a professional venue for fundraising events, community programs, and celebrations. The goal was to offer a high-quality space at prices that nonprofit groups could reasonably afford.
Education has also been an important part of his community involvement. When families approached him about students who were struggling in traditional classroom environments, Thomas's family helped support the creation of Pepin Academies. These public charter schools were developed to serve students with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD.
For more than twenty-five years, Pepin Academies has helped thousands of students through individualized education programs that focus on building confidence, accountability, and life skills. The schools continue to provide a supportive environment where students receive specialized instruction and personal guidance.
Healthcare is another area where he has contributed significantly. Through the Pepin Heart Institute, Tom supported cardiovascular research, patient care, and education related to heart health. These efforts helped strengthen partnerships with leading healthcare institutions throughout the Tampa Bay region. His contributions in healthcare philanthropy earned recognition as Healthcare Philanthropist of the Year.
Public safety has remained another priority in his community work. Thomas has supported initiatives connected with the Tampa Police Department Chief's Foundation and other law enforcement programs. These programs focus on officer wellness, family support, and community engagement efforts that strengthen relationships between law enforcement and residents. His contributions were recognized when he received the Tampa Police Department Citizen of the Year award and was named the twentieth Lightning Community Hero.
His work has received recognition from several institutions. In 2017, Thomas was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame. The Florida Senate has acknowledged his contributions to community service on multiple occasions. The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners also honored him for decades of civic commitment. In 2023, Temple Park was renamed in recognition of the Pepin family’s contributions to the city.
Friends and colleagues often describe him as steady, direct, and loyal to the relationships he builds. His career reflects many years of consistent effort rather than sudden recognition. Through business leadership, community investment, and institutional support, Thomas Pepin has helped strengthen the civic foundation of Tampa Bay, and his long-term influence continues to shape the community today.
