For ulcerative colitis, stem cell therapy is primarily studied in clinical trials for severe, treatment-resistant cases. Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) seeks to reboot the immune system to stop its attack on the colon. Alternatively, mesenchymal stem cell infusions may help reduce mucosal inflammation and promote healing. These are complex procedures with significant risks and are not yet mainstream treatments.
