Cynthia Imperato has built a long career grounded in steady judgment, thoughtful preparation, and public service. Her work as a cop, prosecutor, judge, educator, and board member reflects years of responsibility and a commitment to improving the systems that guide the legal process. Throughout her career, she mentored young lawyers, encouraged practical reforms, and worked toward strengthening fairness and consistency within the courts. She began her professional path as a police officer in Tallahassee. The daily experience of patrol work helped shape her understanding of how cases develop and how crucial clear evidence is to the justice system. This early foundation supported her as she advanced into prosecution and judicial service. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech with majors in psychology and sociology, an M.S. from the School of Criminology at Florida State University, and a J.D. from the Florida State University College of Law. Her academic background provided the structure to manage complex investigations and legal challenges. After completing law school, Cindy Imperato joined the Office of Statewide Prosecution, where she served for thirteen years as a Senior Assistant Statewide Prosecutor. She handled grand jury presentations and prosecutions involving racketeering, homicide, narcotics trafficking, home invasions, white-collar fraud, police corruption, and gang-related violence. She coordinated multi-jurisdictional organized crime cases and helped draft and revise Florida’s gang legislation. Her work included leading the first successful state racketeering prosecution of a street gang. She also spoke at the Florida Intelligence Unit in 1994 and 1995 and taught at the first Multi-Agency Gang Task Force Conference in 1996. In January 2003, Governor Bush appointed her to the Circuit Court bench. She served on the bench for thirteen years before retiring in 2016. During this time, Cindy handled criminal matters and supported judicial education through statewide roles. She trained Judicial Nominating Committees, chaired the Judicial Nominating Criminal Procedures Committee, and worked with the Criminal Rules Committee. In 2006, she spoke at the 82nd Boot Camp graduation and received a Community Service Award from all minority Bar Associations in the state. As part of the Florida Judicial College's video faculty, she taught topics including probation violations, jury instructions, and capital caseload management. Education remained an essential part of her service. For nearly two decades, she taught Criminal Pretrial Practice as an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Law. Earlier, she taught criminal justice at Tallahassee Community College. Her publication, An Assessment of Florida Gangs and Recommendations for Law Enforcement, appeared in Women Police Magazine.
