Dr. Timothy Vogel is a board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon who serves as the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and is the founder of Pediatric Neurosurgeons of New Jersey. He is known for his work in pediatric craniofacial surgery, minimally invasive craniosynostosis surgery, brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, and congenital malformations. His leadership in the first successful surgery performed on a baby born with exencephaly brought significant attention to his clinical approach and patient-focused decision-making. As a leading craniofacial surgeon in the Northeast, Timothy has dedicated his career to improving craniofacial surgery in Northern New Jersey. He established the comprehensive craniofacial center at Hackensack University Medical Center, which earned national accreditation from the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. His team works within a multidisciplinary framework, evaluating and treating complex craniofacial cases to provide coordinated and thoughtful care. He served as co-chair of the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation Gala and is regarded as a leading expert in pediatric brain tumors in New Jersey. He uses minimally invasive procedures to treat children with rare and serious brain and spine tumors. Families from across the Northeast seek his clinical guidance, in part because of the clinical trials he helped develop. He also contributed to the establishment of New Jersey’s first pediatric neuro-oncology laboratory, a center focused on the study of rare childhood brain tumors. He has authored multiple publications and holds several patents. His background as a developmental neuroscientist includes work in CNS genetics and forebrain development. His peers in the New York and New Jersey region consistently recognize him as one of the top pediatric neurosurgeons for both his clinical and academic efforts. Throughout his academic and medical career, Timothy Vogel, MD, has held key positions. He began at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the #1 pediatric hospital in the United States, serving as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Department of Neurosurgery, and the Division of Developmental Biology. He also participated as training faculty and mentor for the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute and the Graduate Program in Molecular and Developmental Biology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. His research included work on the treatment of craniosynostosis, and patients from more than 15 states continue to travel for his minimally invasive endoscopic surgery. During his time in Cincinnati, he expanded his research experience by joining the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School as a Visiting Research Fellow, where he contributed to work involving photomedicine and neuroscience. He later became Director of Pediatric and Craniofacial Neurosurgery at the New Jersey Brain and Spine Center in Hackensack. He then served as Scientific Director and Principal Investigator of the Pediatric Neuro-oncology Lab at the Center for Discovery and Innovation CDI within the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. Before this role, he served as an Associate Member and Faculty at the CDI. Dr. Timothy Vogel went on to lead the Comprehensive Craniofacial Clinic at Hackensack in collaboration with Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center. Today, he continues his work as Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery. His academic background includes studies at Princeton University and medical training at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as Chief Resident. He completed fellowships at Boston Children’s Hospital at Harvard University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis.
