James Gary Sheets has nearly three decades of health care leadership experience, with a career that has included hospital administration, regional oversight, virtual care, and operational development. He has approached leadership by listening, establishing clear priorities, and building teams around the needs of patients and caregivers. Most recently, he led a region encompassing eight hospitals and roughly 150 clinics across Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, with about 12,000 team members and 1,000 physicians and advanced practice providers. As regional president, James Sheets was responsible for growth, quality, safety, financial performance, strategy, and the experiences of patients and caregivers. He focused operations on safety and quality, engaged caregivers, and stewardship. A multi-year improvement plan generated financial gains in its first year while patient satisfaction remained steady. During the same period, quality and safety scores increased, and the region brought its health plan into Colorado through a partnership with a leading local system. Jim Sheets's combined eighteen years with the same health system involved several positions with expanding responsibilities. As a chief operating officer, he managed acute care across 21 hospitals in Utah and Idaho, along with surgery centers, telehealth, air ambulance, and outreach services. The region exceeded financial targets and reached the top tier of national quality rankings. He also created an ambulatory surgery center division, opened a community hospital, developed a long-range modernization plan for flagship facilities, and integrated an acquired air medical company into an existing flight service. Earlier, James managed telehealth and outreach operations across eight states, bringing virtual care together in one modern hub and increasing volume year after year. During the pandemic, his team expanded video visits by a factor of a thousand and introduced virtual programs in behavioral health, remote monitoring, oncology, and other areas. He also served as a hospital CEO and Administrator and later as a Group President overseeing ten hospitals. James Gary Sheets earned two master's degrees and a bachelor's degree in business management, graduating cum laude. He taught future health care executives for nearly a decade, served on numerous boards, raised millions of dollars for health care causes, and volunteered in community programs. He and his wife, a kindergarten teacher, raised five children, and he enjoys golfing, skiing, reading, backpacking, and college football.
