Joe Sottolano, a native of New York, was selected as one of the 36 athletes nationwide to try out for Team USA in 1990. His early baseball achievements include being named the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) at the 1988 Division III NCAA Baseball National Championship. With a coaching career spanning 23 years in Division I, including 14 as a head coach, he has successfully led over 20 of his student-athletes to be picked in the MLB Amateur Draft and 46 to achieve All-American status. Among them, Chris Rowley advanced to the Major Leagues, a testament to Joe's effective coaching. These accolades reflect his relentless competitive spirit and commitment, both on and off the field, rooted in the core values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence that he embraced during his coaching stint at West Point. Joe's journey began at Minisink Valley High School in Orange County, New York, where he clinched the 1986 Times Herald Records Tri-County Player of the Year. He continued to shine as a left-handed pitcher at Ithaca College, where, as a sophomore, he was pivotal in leading the Bombers to a national title, earning the title of the most outstanding player in the Division III World Series. After graduating from Ithaca College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in PE Teaching and a minor in Health, he initiated his coaching career at Drexel University in Philadelphia. There, he was responsible for the pitching staff and the team's strength and agility programs, recruiting talented players to build a championship-worthy team. He returned to Ithaca College to earn a Master of Science and further honed his coaching skills while assisting with the baseball team. In 1992, Joe's coaching career took a significant turn when he joined the United States Military Academy at West Point as an Assistant Baseball Coach, later ascending to Head Coach in 2000. His tenure was marked by exemplary recruitment and fundraising achievements, bolstering the Division I Baseball Team's capabilities and reputation. He also played a crucial role in all aspects of team management, from pitching coaching to overseeing comprehensive training programs. Joe's leadership propelled the team to several NCAA tournament berths for the first time in its over 100-year history (2000, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2012, and 2013), establishing him as the most victorious coach in the Academy's history. His fundraising efforts notably expanded USMA's donor base and financial resources, enhancing the team's facilities and outreach. After West Point, he continued to influence the sport as a premier instructor at the Frozen Ropes National Training Center and later as the Lead Travel Team Instructor at Extra Innings Baseball/Softball Facility, where he developed comprehensive training programs for coaches and athletes. Currently, at Holy Family Schools in Alabama, Joe oversees the physical education curriculum and athletic activities, instilling strong ethics, character, leadership, and Christian values through sports education. He also coaches the 14u Southeast Canes Scout team, sharing his expertise with his sons and young athletes. On a personal note, Joe cherishes his time with his wife, Lori, and their two sons and enjoys hunting and fishing. He is a man of faith who actively gives back to the community, including making donations to individuals and private groups and contributing to local food distribution efforts. His dedication to Excellence and service marks Joe Sottolano's legacy in baseball and education. He has shaped the lives of countless athletes and students.
