Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who launched Monotronic in 2016 as a boundary-crossing indietronica collective. He envisions the group as a unified musical organism, with instruments moving together as one voice. Rooted in a communal philosophy, the project favors shared expression over individual spotlight. Each member contributes original textures and ideas, shaping songs that feel immersive, collaborative, and emotionally resonant. Alongside his music career, Elkholy holds a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra. His research focused on rainforest-dwelling foragers in Indonesia and their deep relationship with land and ritual life. Extended travel across Asia and India, combined with years of fieldwork, broadened his creative lens and strengthened his fascination with rhythm, culture, and collective identity. Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic spent three years backpacking around the world and two years living with the Orang Rimba tribe, where he fell asleep each night to the layered sounds of the jungle. He often recalls the forest as a living symphony of interlocking pulses and natural percussion. Those experiences continue to shape Monotronic’s dense arrangements and hypnotic grooves. Raised in New York and now based in Los Angeles, he records in a converted garage studio. Monotronic’s 2019 debut attracted attention from Rolling Stone, Relix, and other respected outlets. The collective has featured musicians connected to Daft Punk, Chic, Joe Jackson, and The Spin Doctors, reflecting its wide musical reach. Known for dynamic performances, the band has energized festival crowds and city venues alike, blending indie rock hooks with electronic textures and global influences. The album Waiting for You marks a new chapter, combining reflective songwriting with expansive production. Drummer Omar Hakim performed across the record, while bassist Mohini Dey appears on Close Enough.
