Since its inception in 1996, S2 Associates Inc. has grown from a small environmental design firm to a recognized museum exhibition design leader based in Napa, California. Initially concentrating on creating engaging exhibitions, the firm gradually broadened its expertise to include content development, conceptual and final design, production management, and renderings to support fundraising efforts. A significant growth for the company was in 1999 when Daniel Wodarcyk joined as a partner, bringing extensive knowledge in museum exhibition planning and design, which expanded S2’s capacity to work in the cultural and institutional arenas. S2 Associates centers its work around interactive learning experiences, focusing on themes related to culture, science, and technology. Collaboration is integral to the firm’s process; they work hand-in-hand with clients to combine the client’s specialized content knowledge with S2’s design and development expertise. This approach enables them to deliver customized and memorable experiences to visitors. The firm’s collaborative nature has been a defining characteristic since its earliest projects, notably with The Tech Museum of Innovation. This collaborative approach was refined during projects at institutions like the Liberty Science Center and Nevada Discovery Museum. S2 maintains strong partnerships with exhibit producers and professionals both within the U.S. and internationally, which sets the firm apart in the exhibit design. Projects often begin with a workshop involving key stakeholders and exhibit specialists, typically held at S2’s Napa River studio. These sessions create an environment for open discussion, aligning objectives, and addressing challenges at the outset. S2 emphasizes consistent communication throughout development, ensuring all participants remain engaged and informed. Project management is a cornerstone of S2’s practice. The firm ensures that each exhibit installation is completed within the agreed budget and schedule. This disciplined oversight helps maintain the quality and interactive nature of each project. S2 Associates offers a comprehensive suite of in-house services, including exhibit master planning, stakeholder engagement, educational goal setting, content research, exhibit concept development, detailed design, and construction documentation. The firm utilizes advanced software such as Vectorworks CAD, AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, and Unreal Engine for modeling and rendering. Graphic design is managed through the Adobe Suite, while project management relies on Smartsheet and Procore. Prototyping, 3D printing, and physical model construction are additional capabilities that support their exhibit development. Significant projects include the Innovation Gallery at The Tech Museum in San Jose, California. This 8,000-square-foot exhibit highlights key technological innovations—robotics, invention, microprocessing, lasers, and software—that have shaped Silicon Valley’s identity. S2 played a critical role in the Nevada Discovery Museum, which targets children ages eight to twelve and includes a toddler gallery. The exhibits cover regional natural history, sustainable building, art, and invention, focusing on hands-on engagement. At Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, S2 developed the Skyscraper! Exhibit, which spans 12,800 square feet and features a 1,500-square-foot mezzanine. The exhibit educates visitors about the science and engineering behind skyscraper construction. In Pleasanton, California, the firm created the “Building Pleasanton” exhibit at the Museum on Main, which explores the city’s history through various eras using artifacts, images, and architectural materials. Other projects include “Gold, Greed and Speculation” at the Sacramento History Museum, focused on Sacramento’s founding and the Gold Rush, and “Your Story” at the Hayward Area Historical Society, which presents local histories through oversized books and interactive displays. S2 Associates also designed an intimate exhibit for V. Sattui Winery in Napa Valley, set within stone caves to tell the winery’s story from its origins in the late 1800s, through Prohibition, and its revival in the 1970s, enhanced by historic artifacts and visuals. The firm continues to create children’s exhibits at venues such as Clayton Children’s Museum, Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, Liberty Science Center, Hayward Area Historical Society, and Bay Area Discovery Museum, fostering curiosity and hands-on learning. By consistently combining collaboration with technical expertise, S2 Associates remains committed to crafting exhibits that inform and inspire diverse audiences.
