ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: OKKULT MOTION PICTURES

How did OKKULT Motion Pictures come together? What was the first GIF you created?

We fell in love with GIFs in the spring of 2012, watching some great cinemagraphs on the web,
and we decided to try to do something like this. Our first GIF, if memory serves us right, should be this one:

Why GIF art?

Gustavo Torres gave a short and shareable description: ‘GIF art is simple and complex at the same time. It’s endless, short, concrete, fun, can be everything’. From our point of view, for example, Animated GIFs can be also used as a transfer of knowledge, bringing to light relevant and unknown contents occulted in the internet archives. As The Creators Project wrote, ‘the EXCERPTS series transforms images from open source films of important historical and artistic merit into the internet drug we’ve come to love: GIFs!’.

What kind of a process do you go through to find and create your GIFs?

If we talk about the Excerpts project - a collection of animated gifs excerpted from out-of-copyright/unknown/historical moving images - the process of creation starts from the meticulous and painstaking research in the archives of public domain contents - first of all The Internet Archive, our gold mine. After finding the right movie, we select the most relevant and curious sequences and turn them into GIF trying, when possible, to get the ‘perfect loop’.
On the other side, with the OKKULTGIFs we just do what we like and we experiment different type of ‘photographic GIFs’ like cinemagraphs, stereoscopic GIFs and also something never seen before, like the last artwork we made for our handmade analog GIF player, The Giphoscope:

Well, hard to answer with few names, also because we are 2… Scorpion Dagger, Erdal Inci, Paolo Čerić, Explodingactresses, Mr Div, Bill Domonkos, Hateplow.
